Mixdown on The StudioLive

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everybody! Today I did a little mixing on the StudioLive of a live concert using Capture to play the tracks back. We are now only about 7-10 days from shipping this bad boy. Hope you like the blog and you have a safe and prosperous New Year!

  1. Lads, is it motorised faders or mix automation for control of your DAW ? I was thinking why not buy the StudioLive and the FaderPort! Automation for post-production and Live / Studio recording interface with DSP! … and realtime DSP with zero cpu load zero latency!

  2. Hi Rick
    How is the metronome or clicker track routed or setup?
    Is there one in capture and would it be routed to the mixer for those tracking with a click track?
    Will it take up a track when recording?

    On the scene saving, I know it’s possible.
    Is there a way to save these scenes on Capture” or an external device? I think it would be nice to do so in case I take the data back-up disc to another system and bring up my particular mix. Or, would I only be able to open a scene on my own mixer?

    Been thinking of upgrading my home system to something as your system. May need a second one for church and when things progress one for our live shows… see why I need these questions answered?

  3. Just watched the videos and gotta say I’m impressed. I’ve been shopping for a mixer for several weeks now for my studio and almost committed to another brand. One question however. I can appreciate not including moving faders to keep the price down but will the faders generate any type of midi message at all. This would allow for automating your DAW faders while mixing in the box. This would allow for the option of either mixing via the board or in the daw. I can assign the faders on my Axiom keyboard to the faders in my daw but doing it with 100mm faders would allow for much greater control.

    Having fun at NAMM? I hope all is well.

    I have a scenario to question:

    Let’s say I recorded my band, followed the same steps in this video blog, and have rendered a 2-track but notice a few mistakes when I am listening to it in my car. In order for me to continue working on a session or fix mistakes, do I have to save a separate scene on the SL for every session that I have recorded? Does CAPTURE automatically save the settings on the FatChannel on each channel? Or do I have to do both?

    I truly feel like I’ve been using the SL for months. I know it’s right around the corner. I think my other half is jealous.

    The Presonus name came to me when many years ago you first introduced the acp88..Artisan Recorders mobile truck purchased a unit when Presonus first introduced them to the market. It is still in use in the truck today after well over a decade plus of remote sessions.

    Very nice to post some clips on the desk. Makes the learning curve easier for everyone in the market or using it for the first time… I currently use a small arsenal of small mixers for remote jobs as well as in my studio (o1v, onyx 1640,1620, Mackie univ.control etc..) I want to point out at the direct outs on db25 connectors. Those D/O are an important feature that I make use on my remote gigs all the time (no splitter), This feature is important to me as in most situation I rarely mix for the house..easy,space and time saver to mention. Also after reading your blog, I’m happy to read that you’ll be able to cascade more consoles together, yeah!(the competition had promised to do cascading of 2 consoles with their $%^#@ line) N.B. works on my PC’s but still waiting for MAC 6 years later. I could really see the replacement of some of my current mixers putting everything under the same umbrella for set up and recall purposes. I wish that motorized faders would have been implemented thus rising complexity and the price of the unit. Just curious, what was the decisive factor for not putting them in? In my opinion this feature would have completed the all in the box product. None the less a quality product at this price point including all the features is an incredible achievement on your design team. Thanks for writing a piece of software that works in conjunction with the box. From the clips and the lit. it appears to be uncluttered and very simple to use. Easy on the engineer and the ever so taxed laptops and cpus. You guys are raising the bar on the quality of compact AD/DA/mixer/splitter/FX etc.. roster

  7. Hi Anthony,

    I posted an update on our PreSales Forum today but I’ll give you an updated.

    We had a snag in production that pushed back our official release by about 10 days. Originally we were going to ship on January 10th. Right now it’s looking like it will be the week of January 20-25.

    The good news is that this extra time will allow us to get a few more consoles built.

    Thanks to EVERY ONE of you that have preordered StudioLive’s and have been so amazingly patient. Believe me – our goal is to make sure that this board will be worth the wait for you and that it will exceed your expectations.

    BTW, I’m leaving Tuesday to go to NAMM. We will be demoing the daisy chaining of multiple StudioLive’s in our booth. A couple of our endorsers, Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey and David Haynes will be playing live in our booth, recorded to Capture and played back. I’ll try and post a blog of this for you guys so you can check out how the daisychaining will work. (not to mention the freaking nastiness of Victor Wooten and friends)

  8. Thanks Rick for answering about “new” sessions. This truly takes digital mixing and “capturing” to a whole new level. Expansion with more SLs?! This sets the standard and then some.

    I hope you enjoyed your vacation with the fam by the way.

    With regards to the release date, I had it pre-ordered off a web company, and I got an email about a push back until Feb 09. What is the official release date. I’m beyond crazy for this piece of art!

    Yes. After you export songs by separating them by markers, you can open up a new project and import them in one at a time into a new session. For that matter, you can import WAV or AIFF files from any DAW into Capture and use the StudioLive to mix with.

    Sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been in Colorado with my family for a little vacation before the NAMM show next week.

    I’ll try to answer your questions one at a time:

    Regarding why we didn’t go all the way to 96k:
    We are planning to release a new feature on the next firmware update that will allow you to daisy chain multiple StudioLive consoles together to configure a larger input console. If we would have allowed the console to operate at 96k it would have doubled the dsp and memory resources and would have limited the total number of consoles that could be daisy chained.

  11. It seems you have thought of it all. I only have 2 questions Rick. Why did you not go at least up to 96k processing? And what system requirements on a mac do you require to do what you have showed in the studio? Thank you so much, have an awesome new year and don’t sell out before I can get one!

    Thank you so much for posting these videos. I’m already on the waiting list, so I can’t wait. I have to agree, I feel like I can fully use this board out of the box. I’ve been an analog guy for quite some time, using all out board gear for FOH and mon mix and recording on to PTools. I’ve done the PM5D a few times, but for a lot of the smaller gigs (which happen more often now), this is far beyond perfect.

    I do have a question:
    Let’s say I record a gig with multiple songs and use the break function you talked about in one of your tutorials to split each song. Is it possible to remove each track of each song and then open a new session for each song? Basically, can I use CAPTURE and the StudioLive as my main DAW for both sessions recorded with the StudioLive and other tracks from other DAW?

  14. Yes, when you switch to another preset, the audio changes instantaneously. The board then gives you a chance to null out the faders to the preset. However, as soon as you hit recall on a new scene, the board will switch all of the paramters at that time.

  15. Rick,
    When loading a snapshot, will SLive recall the mix even if the faders are not all in position? In other words, will the board use my snapshot mix even if I decide not to move any normalized faders?

  16. Nice featured mixer. Does your band have a website? Also have you thought about posting some music from this test? Of course it is a very fast mixdown but it would be fun to hear some tracks. Maybe drums with and without verb. Same with vocals/horns etc. Then the whole mix.

  17. WOW!!!!!! This has been a great way to learn about your new tool for my recording studio on Maui. I cannot wait now. I will be using Logic, once I create a template it should only be a few clicks to be up and running. I look forward to your future posts.   18. Freakin’ spectacular! Rick, these videos are so helpful– I’ll feel almost ready to go out of the box when I can finally get my hands on a unit!

    I’d like to do something similar to your studio mix-down process, but in a live situation between sets. I want to record the sound-check song, and then during the break before set 1, I’d like to playback the tracks to headphones and dial in the gates/EQs/effects. However, I also need to be pumping house music through the mains (say, from an iPod in the tape inputs, or ideally from iTunes via the connected laptop). Is this possible?
